Seqens and Vetcare: Drug development for international markets

The international company Seqens is a manufacturer of pharmaceuticals and specialty chemicals. For Vetcare, Seqens, and especially its Turku office, have been an important partner in drug development projects. As a result of the development projects, Vetcare has already managed to launch one originator drug on the market, and the development of another is in its final stages.

The key to the cooperation has been mutual trust and commitment to the project and finding the best possible solution. Senior Process Engineer Pasi Nieminen from Seqens has been involved in the collaboration from the very beginning.

Pasi Nieminen from Seqens has been working on drug development with Vetcare for a long time.

"Vetcare has had a strong will to develop better veterinary medicines. This attitude and commitment to development work has also been the secret of its success," Nieminen says.

Drug development is a long process, and the risks involved are also high. Sometimes the development work involves more intensive phases and sometimes we must wait for the results of clinical trials, for example.

"It is important for us to maintain a good customer relationship and manage our own plot well. The people at Vetcare have always been available and we have talked openly on both sides about where we are going," Nieminen describes.

When embarking on a project as demanding as the development of a new medicine, getting the right people involved in the development work is crucial. Fortunately, there is expertise in Finland, even though the districts are small.

"It is extremely rare, even internationally, that the development of an originator medicine can be completed, and the drug entered the global market. Highly skilled and reliable partners have played a key role in this. Seqens has been one of the most important of these," says Veli-Matti Riipinen from Vetcare's Advisory Board, who has also participated in product development projects.

"In projects of this length, it is important that people have an understanding of the risks and a desire to develop together. The company must also listen to experts. And that's what Vetcare has been able to do," Nieminen sums up.
